Barry S. Dembo currently serves as the National Exercise Manager and Continuity Operations Planner for a national intelligence agency located in the Northern Virginia area. Dembo retired from the FBI in 2002, after a 27-year career. He served as a Supervisory Special Agent in the New York City, Miami, Charlotte, Portland, Oregon, Quantico, Virginia and FBI Headquarters offices. Dembo was one of the original members selected to the FBI’s elite Crisis Management Unit within the FBI’s Critical Incident Response Unit. Dembo is a nationally recognized subject matter expert in the fields of crisis management, exercise design, development and execution, as well as school and workplace violence. Dembo received FBI certifications as a firearms instructor, defensive tactics instructor, legal instructor, crisis management coordinator, and SWAT. Throughout his career, Dembo has responded to both domestic and international critical incidents to establish command posts and to conduct investigative and intelligence operations.
Dembo responded to New York City to assist in establishing the FBI Joint Operations Center (JOC) directing all law enforcement investigative and intelligence operations in response to the 9/11 attacks. Dembo has participated in the design and operational execution of security for numerous National Special Security Events (NSSE) such as Summer and Winter Olympics and Super Bowls. Subsequent to his retirement, Dembo was appointed as one of the original Federal Security Directors (FSD) with the Transportation Security Administration upon the creation of the Department of Homeland Security. Dembo has served as an adviser to DHS and the Emergency Management Institute (EMI) in a number of areas and interacts with both DHS and the intelligence community on a daily basis in his current position. Dembo has conducted crisis management training for law enforcement and prosecutorial personnel in Mexico, Venezuela, the Czech Republic, and Taiwan, as well as local and state personnel in the United States.
