Shawn VanDiver was born in Springfield, Illinois in September 1983 and moved to sunny California at the age of 3. He enlisted in the Navy in February 2001 at the age of 17 and has been serving for just over 11 years. He spent 5 years on the USS THACH (FFG-43), stationed in San Diego, serving as a Mk 92 Fire Control System technician operating in support of the Global War on Terrorism as well as the war on drugs. He served as the CF division LPO, CF01, CF02, CF03, CG01, and CG03 work center supervisor, a member of the Combat Systems and Force Protection Training Teams (CSTT and FPTT), supply petty officer, and a number of other minor and major collateral duties. Aboard THACH Mr. VanDiver was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal (4 awards), Good Conduct Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service Medals, Humanitarian Service Medal, several unit awards, Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist, Junior Sailor of the year (2005), and Junior Sailor of the Quarter (3 awards).
In May 2008, he executed orders to Center for Surface Combat Systems Detachment West (CSCS Det West), also in San Diego, CA, to teach MK 92 Fire Control System "C" school. He built and implemented CSCS Det West's Emergency Management program while stationed there, as a product of attending undergraduate and graduate school. Additional duties included Repair Parts Petty Officer, Funeral Detail, and Safety Officer. While teaching MK 92, he achieved certification as a Master Training Specialist (MTS) and was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, and Junior Sailor of the Quarter.
In April 2011, he reported to Aegis Training and Readiness Center Dahlgren, VA and attended AEGIS SPY-1B/B(V)/D school. While stationed at Dahlgren, he took on duties as the Naval Support Activity South Potomac (NSASP) Assistant Emergency Management Officer. As part of his duties, he managed the EOC during Hurricane Irene, directing emergency response efforts at three installations in two states. Finally, he recently reported aboard the USS CHANCELLORSVILLE (CG-62) and is the group supervisor for 25 AEGIS fire controlmen (FCs), the Combat Systems Department 3M Assistant and Career Counselor, and a member of the Anti-Terrorism Training Team (ATTT), Medical Training Team (MTT), and Maintenance Material Management Training Team (3MTT). In August he will report back to ATRC to attend Baseline 9 Aegis Weapons Supervisor (AWS) as CHANCELLORSVILLE is being upgraded to the latest and greatest Aegis Weapons System.
Shawn attended National University for his BS in Domestic Security Management and MS in Homeland Security and Safety Engineering. Additionally, he holds an AA in Electronics Technology from Coastline Community college as well as the following credentials: ASIS Certified Protection Professional (CPP), CompTIA Certified Technical Trainer (CTT+), US Navy Master Training Specialist (MTS), ATAB Certified Anti-Terrorism Specialist - Physical Security Manager and Certified Master Anti-Terrorism Specialist (CAS-PSM and CMAS), C4SEM Certified Emergency Management Specialist (CEMS), Certified Emergency Operations Center Manager (CEOCM), Certified Critical Infrastructure Protection Specialist (CCIPS), and Certified Homeland Security Manager (CHSM), Certified Emergency Manager (CEM), and ABCHS Certified in Homeland Security, Sensitive Security Information Certified, and Certified in Disaster Preparedness (CHS-V, SSI, and CDP). Finally, he holds six United States Department of Labor Journeyman designations.
Additionally, he operates a consulting business and teaches graduate and undergraduate students at Ashford and Capella universities. VanDiver was a charter member of the American Board for Certification in Infrastructure Protection (ABCIP), a sub-board of the American Board for Certification in Homeland Security, and was recently elected Vice Chairman. He is currently the team lead for the development of a national level certification in Critical Infrastructure Protection. He also serves as a Vice President of Committees for the Anti-Terrorism Accreditation Board (ATAB). Mr. VanDiver also serves on the ASIS Supply Chain Risk Management (SCRM) Standards Committee. Finally, he is the quarterly critical infrastructure protection columnist for Inside Homeland Security, a professional journal.
When not in uniform or working in homeland security, Mr. VanDiver enjoys scuba diving, wine tasting, cooking, and eating. He is the single parent of a wonderful 3 year old son, who also enjoys eating and is having a hard time deciding between a career as a rockstar or pirate.
